Abstract
:
Abstract: This thesis aims to discover the application of intercultural performance practices on the Turkish stage. The controversial theory of intercultural performance covers a wide range of theatrical performance and production applications and practices which intend to adapt subject matter and situations from öne different culture to another. This intention mainly involves a transportation and translation of elements and perspectives across cultures. The translator, the audience/reader, and the director fiil in the gaps that are formed during the transportation and translation of these elements and perspectives, with their own interpretations in accordance with the culture they inhabit. Therefore, intercultural performance maintains in itself not only adaptations of techniques and elements of foreign cultures but also translated works that encompass universally shared problems and emotions. These intercultural aspects of theatre serve the world in a sense to form a bond of mutual exchange. However, intercultural performance requires conscious attempts to merge two different cultures together. The attempt should not be done solely for the 'target' cultures' audience but should also regard the perceptions of the 'source' culture as much as it can. in light of the above discussion, Ferdi Merter's production of A sireetcar Named Desire will be analyzed in comparison to other perforrnances of the play in order to locate the distinct changes the Turkish interpretation of the play has incorporated. These changes will be discussed in the light of intercultural performance defınitions and practices. Intervievvs with theatricians and academicians will allow me to explicate the State Theatre perception of intercultural perforrnances while revievving the State Theatre policy of producing approximately 40% International plays per a theatre season. The interviews will assist in disclosing the current practice of intercultural performance theories in Turkey and whether or not the Turkish State Theatres promote intercultural performance practices. This debate essentially takes as its focus the assumption that intercultural performance theory can be used to reshape distinct national performance practices to promote cultural exchange.

Yönetmen, dramaturg ve akademisyenlerle gerçekleştirilen görüşmeler ışığında, Devlet Tiyatrolarının benimsediği, her tiyatro sezonunda uygulanan yaklaşık %40 oranında yabancı oyun sergileme prensibinin gerekçesi araştırılmıştır. Görüşmeler, Türkiye'deki kültürler arası tiyatro uygulamaları hakkında önemli görüşler ortaya koyarken, Devlet Tiyatrolarının kültürler arası tiyatro uygulamalarını destekleyip desteklemediği hakkında da bilgi edinmemizi sağlamıştır. Bu tezin çıkış noktasında, kültürler arası tiyatronun kültürel alışverişi destekleyerek, ulusal tiyatro sanatını yeniden şekillendirdiği anlayışı yatar.
