Abstract
:
The purpose of this project was to create a mentorship program for students who identify as undocumented, Latino, and first-generation college students. The literature suggests this population is at risk for experiencing higher rates of stress and anxiety (Gloria & Rodriguez, 2000; Suarez-Orozco, Yoshikawa, Teranishi, & Suarez-Orozco, 2011; Wang & Castaneda-Sound, 2008;) and demonstrates higher incidences of college dropout (Contreras, 2012; National Center for Educational Statistics, 2001; 2005). When students have mentors and participate in mentorship programs on college campuses, their self-esteem and grades increase (Haeger & Fresquez, 2016; Rios-Ellis et al., 2015). The proposed program application will match students with staff mentors who hold academic advising positions and with peer mentors who identify similarly to them. Using Bronfenbrenner's (2009) ecological systems theory and Nancy Schlossberg's (1989) mattering and marginality theory as a framework, the goal of the mentorship program will be to provide both social and academic support on campus to foster persistence to graduation.
