By 2044, a majority of the U.S. Population will be non-White. A "future White minority" assumes that current minority groups collectively identify as "non-White." The current work tested the relationship between Latino's perceptions of minority population growth and ethnic self-esteem while considering the impact of collective "non-White" ingroup identification. Using correlational (study 1) and experimental (study 2) designs, the interaction between common minority ingroup identity, minority population growth perceptions, and multiculturalism on ethnic, private self-esteem was tested. Results suggest Latino endorsement of multiculturalism drives reactions to shifting demographics. Those higher in multiculturalism reported high ethnic self-esteem regardless of expected demographic change or shared group membership with other minority groups. Those lower in multiculturalism reported higher ethnic self-esteem as members of a common minority ingroup expecting a future minority-majority but, when expecting a future White majority, ethnic self-esteem was higher when minority groups were seen as separate groups.
