Abstract:
America's emergency departments have seen a steady rise in treating mental health patients in the last decade. Due to lack of outpatient resources readily available, emergency departments have become the safety net for these patients. With less and less inpatient beds available and lack of outpatient resources in place, a transformation is needed to provide services to this population. The Psychosocial Rehabilitation Clubhouse model is an excellent start for community integration and outpatient care. Focusing on a work ordered day, attending groups, and being held accountable for participation, the clubhouse allows people with mental illness a place where they can be a part of the greater community while focusing on their recovery. A community resource needs to be developed where the social aspects of the clubhouse are integrated with the psychological and physiological aspects of recovery to work in conjunction to help educate and fill the need of the lack of mental health resources.
