Abstract:
Investigations of Yaxuna, Yucatan, Mexico are beginning to shed light on the complex web of interregional interactions and urban transformation that impacted daily life in the early Northern Lowland center. Previously, this region was understood as being a secondary development of expanding Maya society. However, because of data from Yaxuna, we now believe this region to be contemporaneous with the earliest cities in the Central Lowlands to the south in the Maya area during the earliest portions of the Middle Formative (1000 to 300 BCE). Despite contemporaneity and some material overlap, the traditions present in the Yaxuna are strikingly distinct from deposits found in other Mesoamerican E-groups, during the Middle Formative period. Yet, by the onset of the Late Formative period (300 BCE), the material traditions (caches, commemorations, and termination rituals) at Yaxuna begin to take on more familiar forms and include item classes like greenstone and obsidian. Because of this I argue that Yaxuna's transformation into a sedentary center was gradual over the course of its first 600 years. However, increasing interregional interactions between Yaxuna and its Mesoamerican contemporaries led to a rapid urban transformation, linked to the onset of new traditions and materials. Together, these factors at Yaxuna suggest a rethinking of the emergence and importance of early cities and how they functioned in the Northern Lowlands and throughout Eastern Mesoamerica.
