Abstract:
Background: Balance deficits after concussion can linger beyond symptom resolution and can limit performance during activity. The Concussion Balance Test (COBALT) was specifically designed for an athletic population, with conditions that include a vestibular component. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare sway scores in athletes ages 11--25 with and without history of concussion and compare the sway scores across sports, on the COBALT. Methods: 151 athletes ages 11--25 (99 females and 52 males, mean age 18.97 +/- 2.5), underwent baseline protocol testing on the COBALT: Vestibular Conditions 3 & 4, Visual Motion Sensitivity Conditions 7 & 8. Means sway scores were used to compare athlete's postural stability performance. Results: Negligible correlations were found between history of concussion and all 4 conditions. Across sports, Condition 4 (p<.001) was significant, football sway scores were higher compared to rugby, cheer, and rodeo. Condition 7 (p<.001) was significant, sway scores in football were lower compared to rugby, cheer and rodeo. Condition 8 had significance (p<.001), sway scores were higher in football compared to soccer, rugby, cheer, and rodeo. Discussion: Our study coincides with literature which has not found significant postural stability differences in athletes with and without concussion history. Higher sway scores for football players have been seen in other literature which concurs with our findings for Conditions 4 & 8.
