Abstract:
The following document is an Executive Position Paper which provides a model that can be followed when implementing a training program for families that teaches them how to support their child's learning by way of reading. All children have the potential to succeed in school and life, and all children deserve to be loved and supported in their personal and academic journey. Sadly, this is not always the case. Many children are placed at risk because they lack one key component to reaching or striving for success: support.
Statistically, children who are supported have positive outcomes. Familial support is a known factor that results in advantageous effects. Studies show that children who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do well in all facets of formal education. Reading to children is one of the most important things a parent can do to prepare a child with a foundation for academic excellence. When student learning is supported by parents, children have greater opportunities for meaningful, engaged learning and they are able see the connection between the curriculum in school and the skills that are required in the real world. The training program empowers parents with the knowledge necessary prepare their children for success in school and for life.
