For seven weeks, I worked with thirteen at-risk high school girls to explore issues of identity through a devised theatre performance. My intent was to examine the ways arts-based research might provide more insight into narratives of adolescent identity than traditional qualitative methods. Throughout the process, I found evidence that working through theatre provided a space in which the traditional researcher/participant relationship was disrupted and the girls I worked with felt more comfortable expressing their uncensored thoughts and opinions. Additional findings include insight into the ways this group of girls constructed and expressed their identities and understood their own power and agency.
