Evaluations of college awareness programs have been devoted almost exclusively to secondary-level programs. Thus, it remains unclear the extent to which elementary-level programs are effective in influencing students' attitudes about college. This research project investigated a program that attempted to influence elementary students' attitudes toward college. The program involved 125 elementary students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Participants were enrolled in an after-school program involving a yearlong, 15-lesson college awareness program. Data for the study were collected by the school district during the 2015-2016 school year. The relationships among student attitudes, hope, gender, ethnicity, and SES were examined. The newly developed scales had satisfactory psychometric characteristics and statistically significant positive correlations were found between the Hope and Attitudes toward College variables. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that students' attitude toward college were predictive of students' sense of hope. Hope was also found to predict students' attitudes toward college. It may be possible to maximize the positive effects of early elementary awareness by focusing on increasing students' sense of hope.
