Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the psychometric characteristics of a new continuous performance test (CPT) called Simulated Learning Adaptability Metrics (SLAM) using a sample of Cantonese speaking adults in Hong Kong. SLAM was designed to be a culturally accurate measure of attention, information processing speed, and working memory/executive functioning. The data were analyzed by applying the working memory-processing speed model postulated by Deluca (2008). Test-retest (ICC = .77) and internal consistency reliability (alpha = .85) were found to be adequate. Standard error of measurement for mean hit time was adequate for measurement accuracy. In addition, there was no significant practice effect over a 2-week period. The influence of demographic factors on SLAM performance was examined and positive correlations were found for education and prior experience in using computers, whereas, age and performance were negatively correlated. The study also established concurrent validity for SLAM for attention, processing speed, and working-memory/executive functioning via correlational relationships between SLAM scores and various scores on established tests: the Color Trails Test, the Digit Span Test and the Chinese Victoria Stroop Test. SLAM was judged to be appropriate for use in cross-cultural research.
