Abstract:
Injury to the brain has been known to have long lasting and potentially fatal effects. Research into these effects has been underway, specifically with regard to the link between brain injury and development of neurodegenerative disorders. Several large scale studies have found a link between history of TBI and increased risk of dementia (Barnes et al,. 2014, Gardener et al., 2014, Guo et al., 2000). Studies have also highlighted the importance of factors such as time since injury, gender, and TBI type to increase the risk factor of developing dementia after injury (Gilbert et al., 2014). This study used archival data of neuropsychological test data collected in a private practice setting of individuals diagnosed with dementia with and without a history of TBI and compare their results on measures of verbal memory and fluency as well as psychiatric functioning to determine if specific differences exist in neuro-degeneration post brain injury. Multiple univariate analysis revealed no significant differences between groups on measures of verbal fluency or memory. There was also no significant difference in dementia severity between groups. Patients with a history of TBI and vascular dementia showed higher rates of depression (p = .02) than their non-TBI counterparts.
