Abstract:
Brain imaging studies have established abnormal structural integrity and functionality amongst psychopaths, however these findings are often conflated by inclusion of antisocial and violent populations. Psychopathy subtypes have been established according to personality structures but no study to date has attempted to discern distinct neuroimaging profiles of primary and secondary psychopathy. The following analysis combines two of the foremost approaches to the study of psychopathy -- neuroimaging and psychopathy subtypes -- to explore whether distinct neuroimaging profiles present for primary and secondary psychopathy. A statistical analysis was conducted on 12 structural imaging studies to determine if primary and secondary psychopathy produce discrete profiles. Results failed to discern psychopathy subtypes according to neuroanatomical structures. Potential explanations for findings, including study limitations are discussed.
