Abstract:
Flow has been operationalized as the positive psychological state that typically emerges through a fusion of action and awareness where individuals report total absorption in the activity at hand (Nakamura & Csikszentnihalyi, 2002). The findings of many studies (Lindsey & Maynard, 2005; Pates & Maynard, 2002; Koehn, 2014) have provided evidence to the idea that flow state can be enhanced and athletic performance improved. Prior research has only measured flow at the culmination of an athletic event or activity, thereby capturing flow only as a global experience over the performance and unable to detect changes in flow throughout the dynamic process of the event. The current study measured flow at 10 different time points across the athletic performance, immediately following performance of five free-throw conditions and five ball-handling cone drill conditions, in an alternating ABABABABAB single-subject design. The findings suggest varied patterns of flow across performance for different athletes, and suggest that the relationship between flow and athletic performance may differ for specific types of athletic tasks. Future research appears warranted to further understand the dynamic nature of changing flow throughout athletic performances, and the relationship between flow state and athletic performance particularly as it relates to different types of athletic tasks.
