The present work is also an attempt to analyses the morphometric characteristics of landforms in Chatra plateau, and to obtain morphometric characteristics between morphometric attributes on the one hand and the soil erosion and methods of conservation's on the other. The study-area forms a part of Chhotanagpur highlands in Jharkhand, India and measures about 3665.92km2. It is represented on one-inch topographical sheet 72H/2, 3, 4; 72D/8, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16; 73D/9, 10 and 73A/13, issued by the Survey of India. Heights scale, given in English measure on the topo-sheets, have been converted into metric system. Each morphometric attributes namely absolute and relative relief, dissection index, drainage density, drainage frequency and average slope, has been analyzed and classified by dividing the study-area into grids of 10.24km2. Application of statistical techniques, including calculation of mean, median, mode and Karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation for suitable pairs of attributes, has been made to asses the inter-dependence of the attributes. Observations based on the analyses of morphometric attributes have been verified and correlated with geologic and tectonic conditions prevailing in the area. An attempt has been made also to obtain a hierarchy of morpho-unit of like-form characteristics. Study of the soil erosion and methods of soil conservation in relation to morphometric attributes of terrain and terrain units form an applied aspect of this study.
