Abstract:
Geomorphology, the study of evolution and analysis of the three dimensional geometry of the earth surface forms of different origins, i.e. erosional, depositional, tectonic, etc., is the recent off shoot of geology, stratigraphic and diastrophic history of the earth on one hand and geography the study of earth as the abode of man, on the other. It is remarkable that the subject having been confined to the earth surface, the stage of the human activities is developing as a multi-disciplinary subject owing its recognition by the applied scientists and planners, engaged in the formulation and implementation of human welfare programs. As a claimed by the scientists like Davis, Wooldridge and Kennedy, the land surface from is the only record which helps to weave out the past story of the earth's stratification. The interrupted stratification marked by unconformities can well explain the breaks in the form building processes under operation and possibly more correctly correlate the analogous assumptions of buried landscape with the present one. Fenneman rightly holds that, "the study and interpretation of the records left by erosion constitute the larger part of the science of geomorphology". The early diachotomy of the study is quite apparent from the fact that the geologist viewed the landforms as the products of the operations and interactions of the geomorphic processes at work in production, transportation and deposition of materials forming rocks and giving it ultimate shapes, though in accordance with topography, mode of occurrence, physio-chemical compositions, lithology, etc., while the geographers confined mainly to the description of natural landscapes and classification and levelling of the landforms are more precisely, the respective vertical and horizontal cross section orientation envisages by Russell.
