Abstract:
Vegetable crops are rich sources of carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins. Vegetables are everyday needed by human being as essential food. Vegetables are taken as such (Salad) or cooked. Some Vegetables (green vegetables) are also source of minerals which are also essential for human health.
The vegetable crop plants are very much susceptible to heavy metal pollutant, Branchelay (1936) reported that nickel is not needed by the plants. Due to rapid progress at technology there has been great progress of our country. However, pollution is a by product of this progress. Through various sources nickel comes in the environment and causes soil and water pollution. There is uptake of Nickel compounds by the plaints in this way this metal becomes accumulated in edible part of the plaints. Man is dependent for food on the plants Ni present in the edible part of the plant is consumed by human being. Thus it comes in the human body and causes several diseases. This heavy metal also damage the activity of several enzymes in plant and animals.
It is well established that nickel inhibits electron transport activity during photosynthesis and it has also inhibitory effect on respiration. Inhibition of growth and yield has also been reported by several investigators. It has also been studied that nickel is present beyond the permissible limit in the biological system which creates toxicity and thus becomes hazardous.
A great deal of work about heavy metal pollution on microbes i.g. cyanobacteria and other group of algae have been done by several investigators. There is a scanty information regarding the impact of Ni pollution on vegetable crops. Therefore it was of the interest to study the impact of Nickel pollution on certain vegetable crops.
Next to cereals there is cultivation of vegetables. Commonly vegetables are cultivated adjacent to the Arban population. The Munisipal and the adjacent area are commonly occupied by cultivation of vegetables which are adversely polluted. Therefore it was of interest to work on impact of Nickel on certain vegetable crop plants.
