Abstract:
In chapter 1 some theoretical models of the reactions of photons are discussed, with particular reference to the application of a total cross-section measurement to Compton scattering. The present status of total cross-section measurements is given. In chapter 2 the tagged, photon beam to be used, in the experiment is described. Chapter 3 gives the details of the design and. construction of the apparatus with particular attention to the parameters required for the vetoing system. Chapter 4 describes the electronic logic used, in the experiment for both tagging and. hadron systems. Chapter 5 gives details of the experimental procedure and the tests made to show that the apparatus was working efficiently. Chapter 6 discusses the analysis of the results and. the corrections to be applied to them. In chapter 7 the total cross-section is used, to derive information about the Compton scattering amplitude. The real part is derived, by a dispersion relation and, the possibility of a real constant term is discussed. The validity of vector dominance is mentioned.
