Lloyd's Register of Shipping's published Rules for the construction of oil tankers consist mainly of mathematical formulae for the scantlings. A lengthy ALGOL computer program has been written which calculates the scantlings, weights and centres of gravity of the main hull structure. Parametric studies of typical midship cargo tanks have yielded empirical formulae for use in preliminary ship design. Extensions to the existing program are discussed.
