Abstract:
In the literature, traditional Bedu movement has been represented as part of tribal social, political and economical structures and the key to Bedu survival. Bedu mobility was further represented as being primarily related to the seasons and the resulting resource opportunities. Movements varied greatly with specific circumstances, albeit difficult to generalise. Different countries have different political and economic situations which have influenced Bedu movement in very different ways. Therefore, it is necessary to classify pastoralists specifically for the Jordan Badia, as well as to examine in detail seasonal patterns of movement and the impact of modernisation, development and globalisation on nomadic pastoral societies, particularly Bedu groups. Modernisation has resulted in three distinctive pastoralist groups among Bedu in the Jordanian Badia. These was in their mobility; semi-nomadic, semi-settled and agricultural pastoralist groups have emerged from new political and economic circumstances at national, and more importantly regional, levels. In addition to ecological factors, there are other equally, if not more, important elements that play major roles in influencing Bedu movement in the north-east Badia of Jordan. Bedu pastoralists have experienced significant economic and social changes, brought about by a number of modernising developments, which in turn have influenced Bedu mobility patterns, and have created a number of imbalances in the relationship between pastoralists and their environment, both in terms of how it is perceived and how it is managed. The results of a survey based on a multi-method approach, are presented and discussed to explain Bedu seasonal movements within the Jordan Badia Research and Development Programme area between October 1994 and October 1995. Findings of this research explains how, why and when Bedu move within the region, and explain differences in mobility patterns between groups. The nature and reasons for sedentarisation are analysed and presented by examining key social, geographical, political and economical factors, and identifying the main mechanisms that account for changing patterns of Bedu movement. The research also examines the socio-economic structure and characteristics of the three contemporary mobile groups in the Jordan Badia.
