Abstract:
During the period 1980 to 1983 the author participated in an experiment at the CERN OMEGA Spectrometer. This experiment (WA67) was designed to study the &phis;&phis; system by collecting data from the reaction piBe → &phis;&phis;X at 85 GeV/c. The &phis;&phis; system is of interest because it has been suggested that the hadronic production of the JP=0- hidden charm state etac(2980) may be observed through the decay to two &phis; mesons and because it is expected that gluonium states exist in the mass range 2.0 to 2.5 GeV/C2 and these should decay to two mesons. The author has been involved in many aspects of preparing and analysing the experiment and in particular 1) the development of a data preselection program 2) the determination of detector efficiencies 3) the determination of the &phis;&phis; mass resolution 4) the examination of the &phis;&phis; mass spectrum for resonances 5) the analysis of the decay angular distributions of the &phis;&phis; system. Due to the large number of events recorded during the experiment modifications to the standard event reconstuction program were developed using downstream detectors in order to reject spurious triggers at an early stage of processing. The efficiences of the trigger hodoscopes and Cerenkov detectors were determined by using data from the experiment to predict signals from the detectors and were used to estimate the effect of detector inefficiencies on the data The &phis;&phis; mass resolution was determined from the errors on the track parameters of the particles and from the an examination of the observed &phis; and K0 signals. The mass resolution was used in an examination of the &phis;&phis; mass spectrum for narrow resonances and in the estimation of the upper limits of the cross-section for a narrow resonance. An analysis of the decay angular distributions of the &phis;&phis; system and the &phis;'s was performed since any resonances obscured by background processes in the mass spectrum may have different angular distributions from the background and so be more easily observed.
