Abstract:
The current study investigates the psychosocial well-being needs of mental health workers in a residential treatment facility for child welfare youth instrumental to implement Trauma Informed Care (TIC), an evidence-based practice for trauma. TIC requires a substantial series of organizational changes at every ecological level (e.g., client service, staff support, and organizational structures) and is implemented primarily with human resources rather than physical assets the organization can purchase. The changes require staff to engage in more intense emotional labor as trauma-specific services are delivered and employees have increased contact with clients' traumatic material. As a result, a program evaluation has been performed to determine the psychosocial capacities the organization possesses that support or hinder this change. A mixed method project was completed that explored the relationships between organizational psychosocial well-being and employee openness to organizational change to a trauma-specific model of service delivery. Specifically, internal employee factors of organizational psychosocial well-being (e.g., coping, burnout, and prior trauma exposure) and environmental context factors of organizational psychosocial well-being (e.g., social support, job strain, and client needs) that affect the overall quality of work life of these mental health workers were explored in relation to workers' attitudes toward organizational change.
