Abstract:
Research suggests that individuals notice race almost immediately, yet some people avoid mentioning race labels in an attempt to appear colorblind. Despite the utilization of colorblind strategies among certain individuals, race labels are still used regularly, though inconsistently. The present study investigated whether Whites primed with a colorblind ideology have differential perceptions of ingroup members who use the labels African American and Black, and of targets described with these terms, compared to Whites primed with multiculturalism. The results indicate that participants perceived their interaction partners to be more likeable and more amiable when they used the label African American compared to the label Black. Furthermore, participants who were primed with a colorblind ideology perceived their interaction partner to be less moral when they used the label Black compared to those used the term African American. Additionally, participants primed with colorblindness perceived a target to be more likeable than participants primed with multiculturalism regardless of the race label used to describe him.
