Abstract:
This study, which was conducted in a safe shelter for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, tested the effectiveness of a program of the researcher's design, titled Holistic Empowerment Leadership Program (HELP). HELP was developed in order to empower survivors of interpersonal violence to become more self-sufficient. Self-sufficiency was defined in terms of four variables: financial empowerment, personal safety, self-esteem, and supportive relationships. Results of statistical analyses indicated that women exposed to HELP were more self-sufficient upon exiting the program than they had been when they entered. Results also indicated that women exposed to HELP were more self-sufficient upon exiting the program than were women that had not been exposed to HELP.
