Abstract:
This mixed method study explored the impact of short-term, compassionate coaching in emotional intelligence on the overall Salvation Army officer training experience for millennials. Twenty-six cadets were assessed for changes in psychological safety, self-efficacy, and stress tolerance using the EQ-i 2.0, the Team Learning and Psychological Safety Survey, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Perceived Stress Scale. A mixed-model ANOVA indicated that there was not a significant difference between the scores of those who received the short-term coaching and those who did not. A qualitative content analysis emphasized cadet concerns about psychological safety and stress levels within the officer training environment. Recommendations for future research and suggestions for training modifications were made to enhance officer training for the millennial generation.
