This project investigates the role of religion as a mode of political persuasion to discern public opinion formation. It explores the impact of religion--specifically, theologies of liberation--black liberation and womanist theology--that are predicated on the assertion that God is on the "side of the oppressed" in the Black Church. Unlike previous studies of the impact of religion on political opinion, voter turnout and voting behavior, I isolate theology---how individuals reason about God and the Divine--to argue that among African American populations theology is a more rigorous, robust, and predictive mechanism than party identification or religiosity to understand more conservative stances on issues related to morality. This project also introduces and evaluates the political effects of womanist political theology---a radical and inclusive theology that reads Black women into the study of God, and the Divine text. Put differently, this project is centered on the analysis of political subjects using sexuality issues as a frame to bridge a broader gap within the literature and understand the actual mechanisms that render religion meaningful in the formation of political attitudes and opinions of African Americans of faith. I find that African American women update their political attitudes when they begin to center themselves around the study of God and the Divine Text. I also find that varying theological frames can influence an individual's policy preferences.
