Abstract:
The framework of the program consists of modifying trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy and parent child interaction therapy with therapeutic approaches designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The program was developed through identifying that children with developmental disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, are more likely to experience abuse or maltreatment in comparison to typically developing children (Goldson, 2002). An extensive literature review found a gap in the research for trauma informed therapy programs for youth with ASD. A needs assessment survey was conducted to determine if there is a need for a trauma informed program for youth with ASD; if there is an interest for such a program; if the program is feasible to implement; and important components to be included in the program. Results from the needs assessment survey indicated that a trauma informed program for youth with ASD is strongly needed in the field. In addition, that there is an interest for such a program and it is feasible to implement in multiple in-patient and outpatient settings by a mental health professional. The important components to include in creating the program were congruent with the research conducted in the review of the literature. The results and literature review concluded that the program should modify evidence based trauma informed programs with empirically supported therapy programs for autism spectrum disorder. The program modifies trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and parent-child interaction therapy with visuals, role-plays, concrete information, behavioral plans, communication tools, social stories, parent involvement, and extended time to process information (Cohen et al., 2006; Bagner & Eyber, 2007; White et al., 2009).
