Abstract:
While some believe the myth that Asian Americans have a higher suicide rate than other racial/ethnic groups, the suicide rate for Asian Americans is half the national rate (American Psychological Association, 2018). This misleading perception plays into the model minority myth, in which American society deems Asian Americans as the model minority because of their high educational attainment, economic mobility, occupation, etc. (Goto & Abe-Kim, 1998). These successes mask the fact that there are many health disparities among Asian Americans especially that of mental health. Compared to their White counterparts, Asian Americans have higher rates of unmet mental health needs as well as lower utilization rates (Ho, Yeh, McCabe, & Hough, 2007). Cultural attitudes, values, behaviors, and especially stigmas, act as barriers to the use of mental health services. Yet, at the same time, cultural values serve as protective factors. The purpose of this research is to explore the cultural values that contribute to the lowered suicide attempts among Asian Americans. By examining these cultural values, social workers will acquire knowledge about a population that has not been extensively researched, especially in regard to suicide. Lastly, this research will present an evaluation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Culturally Competent Services as interventions for addressing suicide among the Asian American population, as well as a case study and recommendations for social work practice, policy, and research.
