Abstract:
This action research project explored the effects of positive praise on time on task. Lower elementary students spend much time of the school day working on different activities and assignments. Some activities take more time, concentration and effort than others. Teachers have struggled with implementing appropriate interventions to increase time on task. To increase time engaged on a task, this study suggested an intervention using positive praise with students. The effects of positive praise on student's ability to stay on task were investigated. This intervention was used on two first grade students in a self-contained behavior disorder classroom. Students were observed all day, when in school attendance, and data was taken daily. It was hypothesized that increasing positive praise would have a positive effect on each area of the study. It was found that, when increasing the amount of positive praise, student's percentage of time on task increased, as did positive behaviors and academic scores. Results indicated that positive praise increased student's overall performance and should be utilized more in schools.
