When a child is diagnosed with cancer, needs for both the patient and the family dramatically change. While in the hospital, pediatric patients are able to receive palliative care services beginning at the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment. The aim of this study was to examine bereaved parental perspectives of palliative care services they received at various hospitals. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews examining the experiences of two bereaved parents. Results indicated that there is a misunderstanding of palliative care goals and the need for positive relationships when collaborating with medical staff. Additionally, parents spoke about their preferences for preparation, advocacy, appreciation among staff, collaborative communication, influences of decision making, and child life impact. This study brings awareness to the need for consistent palliative care programs across hospitals, as palliative care has the potential to positively benefit coping for the child and the family as they navigate pediatric cancer.
