Abstract:
The use of 3-Dimensional printing has increased significantly in previous years. 3-Dimensional printing is used by multiple industry subsectors, including motor vehicles, aerospace, machinery, electronics, and medical products. However, 3-D printed products represent 1% one percent of manufactured products in the U.S. As 3-D printing has better dimensional accuracy and less build time of the systems, it may change the way consumers interact with producers. 3-Dimensional printing technology offers opportunities for the economy and society. It can facilitate the customized production of strong light-weight products and it allows designs that were not possible with previous manufacturing techniques. In many instances, the efficiency of part produced using 3-D printing processes exceeds that of traditional methods. This report examined the literature on machining accuracy and other advantages of 3-D printing and identified instances where 3-D printing might be effective than conventional casting process of using wooden pattern for creating mold. Research on 3-D printing machining accuracy revealed that this technology was better for manufacturing small as well as large batches with continued centralized manufacturing; however, the cost of installation of 3-D printers are high. Research also revealed that 3-D printing had minimal design restrictions as well as shorter lead times. 3-D printing requires little manual input unlike wood working process. Wood working is limited to certain tools. So, the implementation of 3-D printing for manufacturing is far better when compared to conventional production process.
