Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of parental involvement on juvenile delinquency outcomes and available interventions. The study aims to examine micro, mezzo, and macro level interventions that help decrease the issue. This study includes a qualitative content analysis with a comprehensive literature review of scholarly peer reviewed articles with the dependent variable of juvenile delinquency. The main findings showed that juvenile delinquency appears to be a society's phenomenon more than an individual problem. In addition, the study showed that some of the most important determinants for juvenile involvement were parenting styles, ethnicity, and parents' economic status. Interventions that had compelling outcomes in decreasing juvenile delinquency were Skills and Competency Building, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy models, and Mentoring Programs at the micro-level. At the mezzo-level, there were family-based interventions that utilized Multi Systemic Therapy, Multidimensional Treatment, and Foster Care and Functional Family Therapy. In addition, there Juvenile Justice and Policy Change at the macro-level. This study concluded that early onset of violence and delinquency is associated with more serious and chronic violence. In addition, this study points out the relevance of social workers involvement in advocacy at a macro level. As practitioners of this field social workers should be trained to understand the main risk factor that conduce to juvenile delinquency.
