The purpose of this thesis is to explore patterns of human-avian interaction in the ancient Southwest by examining evidence of Meleagris gallopavo (turkey) presence in an ancestral Puebloan community located near Houck, Arizona. The Houck community was primarily occupied between AD 800-1250, before and during the transitional period when turkeys became nutritionally significant to some Puebloan groups in the Four Corners region. When the Houck sites were excavated during a highway expansion project in the early 1960s, turkey remains were found in a variety of archaeological contexts. Legacy field notes, maps, photos, and artifacts housed at the Museum of Northern Arizona comprise the foundational data used to analyze spatiotemporal contexts of turkey remains at the Houck site cluster. Using spatial analysis, faunal evaluation, and ethnographic review, I identify patterns and traditions in turkey presence over time. I analyze patterns of distribution and skeletal pathology by engaging concepts of behavioral archaeology, indigenous ontology, and multispecies ethnography. With this methodological grounding, I evaluate turkey keeping in the ancient Houck community and compare the resulting data to prior literature on turkey presence and husbandry at archaeological sites within the ancestral Puebloan landscape. In my discussion, I employ an innovative melange of complementary methods to provide information on the range of interspecies relationships within the ancient Puebloan communities of the Puerco Valley, and examine the resulting implications that this microscale study provides for the larger picture of avian domestication in the American Southwest.
