Adolescent males are at a pivotal time in their lives where their social, emotional, and physical well-being are being molded for their future. The long-term success of any country is ultimately based on the educational system and a nation's ability to provide its citizens with a quality education which, in turn, sets a solid foundation for the country's economic future. The consequences for such a low graduation rate, both nationally and in the state of Alaska have a broad range of consequences. The general problem that was addressed in this research was the consistent academic underachievement of male high school student-athletes. This study utilized the theoretical framework of Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory for investigating this problem of academic underachievement of high school male student-athletes. The social cognitive theory states that an individual's behavior is shaped and molded as they interact with the environment as well as experimental learning which requires the individual to learn behavior through observation of a model. The participants in this study included current as well as former high school head football coaches in the state of Alaska to identify strategies and process they utilized to promote academic achievement among their student-athletes. Ten interviews were completed which identified several strategies such as after-school support that coaches used to promote academic achievement. One method in which many coaches identified in regards to afterschool academic support was providing student-athletes will a study hall, some mandatory and some optional. Many of the coaches interviewed felt that participation offers many benefits such as teaching the participants life skills which are transferable to their professional lives after high school.
