Abstract:
This study explored how Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrant parents applied culturally based parenting strategies from Cara y Corazon (Face and Heart) an Indigenous based parenting strengthening curriculum, and examined how the parents' experiences translated into home and school parent involvement. Post-Colonial Theory informed the study by establishing the significance of Indigenous epistemology in parent involvement. The researcher employed a critical ethnographic approach to analyze and interpret interviews conducted with participating parents from two rural schools in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California. The researcher highlighted three overarching themes; the significance of circles, effective family communication, and the importance of traditional values. Social workers and educators can use the implications of this study to develop parent involvement programs that critically engage parents in forming healthy interdependent families and communities.
