Archaeologists have developed comparative studies of apprenticeship systems in regard to stone tool production. This project draws from this emerging literature to produce a set of criteria for judging skill in lithic analysis and apply it in a case study. Specifically, this project looks at Herrick Hollow I, a lithic scatter site in Delaware County, New York, in the context of the Meadowood phase of the Early Woodland period of Northeastern North America. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of formal stone tools and debitage are employed based on the set of criteria. These are used to determine the level of skill at the site and the nature of the community of practice surrounding flintknapping. The results demonstrate the presence of intermediate and expert flintknapping at the site and suggest an important role for lithic scatter sites in the context of the political economy of the Meadowood.
