Abstract:
Historically, Scientists and Policymakers saw dust storms in Arizona as insignificant, now they recognized the need for a forecast model that can predict storms farther into the future. Current forecast models provide up to a 36-hour warning for potential dust storms. The Weather Research and Forecasting Model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) program improved the reliability of global dust storm forecasting. In Arizona, researchers created programs capable of modeling the size, location, and duration of Arizona dust storms, but were unable to model accurate dust concentrations. This research used the WRF program to improve on existing forecast models. Three dust storms were used as representative case studies to calibrate the WRF-Chem program for the State of Arizona. The analysis of the dust storms used both quantitative and qualitative analytical methods to identify the input parameters, validate the model, and test the accuracy of the refined model. The results indicated that the University of China dust emission model, though not ideal, showed promise for modeling Arizona dust storms. Accurately modeling Arizona dust storms will likely require better geographic and land use information.
