Abstract:
This study is based on the four largest Latino groups in Houston, Texas: Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans and Hondurans. The growth of the Mexican population has been widely addressed, but there has been little discussion on the Central American nationalities. While an extensive array of literature on the Latino population in the United States exists based on its impact at the national level, there is not sufficient research on specific Latino nationalities in particular metropolitan areas that have taken in the greatest number of migrants. There have been academic discussions of Latino groups in older cities like New York, Chicago and Miami, but there has not been research on the city of Houston in terms of occupational mobility and educational attainment by gender among different nationalities. Research shows that Latina women have a higher educational attainment than men, neither males nor females are showing any occupational mobility, and Mexicans have the greatest median income.
