Abstract:
Electronic cigarettes have been suggested to be a potential nicotine replacement for former smokers. Nicotine delivery is an important aspect regarding electronic cigarette usage and smoking cessation. Higher powered electronic cigarette devices have shown to reach nicotine levels of combustible tobacco cigarettes. Aldehyde production has shown to increase as a function of power. The addition of water to e-juice may lower the production of aldehydes, but this may also negatively affect nicotine yield. If by adding water to e-juice reduces aldehyde production, it is imperative that the vaping community and regulators be made aware. Given that nicotine delivery is a primary goal of using an electronic cigarette, analyzing and understanding the effect of water-dilution has on nicotine yield is imperative to future studies regarding water-dilution and aldehyde production. The addition of water to two commonly used e-juice blends did not appear to negatively affect nicotine yield; in fact, one e-juice solution appeared to increase in nicotine yield as water concentration increased.
