Abstract:
The proposed project presents a support group for a summer bridge program at a community college. It is designed for first-generation college students entering their freshman year. The group will provide students with support and guidance during their transition to college. This master's project reviews why first-generation students have traditionally been unsuccessful academically in college. The project reviews the research that identifies how to support first-generation students to continue their academic success after their first year of college. THRIVE is based on Bandura's (1997) self-efficacy theory, and Chickering and Reisser's (1993) seven vectors of identity development. During the group, students will discuss topics that will encourage their identity development and their identification of goals. The goal of the group is to support students' successful transition to a community college after high school graduation, with the long-term goal of transferring to a four-year institution and graduating with a bachelor's degree.
