Abstract:
The number of female high school athletic directors across the state of Texas have traditionally been low. In fact, the number of females who are entering the profession in entry level positions (i.e. Assistant or Head Coaching) have been declining over the years. The inequitable amount of females who serve as high school athletic directors has been documented as being an issue across the country. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to analyze the current leadership perspectives of high school female athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area. A descriptive qualitative case study design was considered appropriate to describe the leadership styles phenomenon that was taking place among female high school athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area. To gain an in depth understanding into why there is such a low number of female high school athletic directors, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted. All participants consented to being interviewed and all interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached. Findings from this study included: (a) The Need for more Female Coaching Opportunities, (b) A Lack of Female Role Models in the Athletic Directing Profession, (c) Needed Changes in the Hiring Process, (d) Female vs Male Leadership Styles, (e) and Breaking Through the Football barrier in the State of Texas. Findings from this qualitative study may benefit aspiring female athletic directors by helping them to better understand the current leadership trends within their chosen profession. Future studies may be required to obtain a comprehensive understanding of leadership perspectives across the state of Texas and the country.
