Given the ideological divide in the United States, it has become increasingly important to study variables that impact how one views the world. This study sought to examine the correlations between crucial social and psychological variables that potentially influence one's worldview. These variables include political ideology, religiosity, prejudice, empathy, perspective taking, dogmatism, psychological flexibility, and spiritual & religious flexibility. Researchers also utilized a measure of social desirability to correct correlation coefficients for overt and covert faking in responses. This study utilized self-report data from 281 American Amazon Turk users ranging in age from 18--82. Key results indicate that conservatism was found to be positively correlated with prejudice, dogmatism, and religiosity but negatively correlated with empathy and perspective taking. Furthermore, prejudice and religiosity were both found to be significant predictors of conservatism. Overall, these findings extend previous literature by studying crucial ideological variables in a single study. Although inconclusive, these results may demonstrate that researchers and clinicians may be able to influence prejudice by increasing one's empathy.
