Abstract:
The avian tree of life is a hypothesis of the evolution of bird species and their relationships with one another. Accipitrif rmes is one of the avian orders that includes most of the diurnal birds of prey, comprised of three families, the monotypic Pandionidac and Sagittariidae, and the Accipitridae. Four major phylogenies of Accipitridae have been published. These studies agree on many of the major nodes, but there are some differences among these analyses. In order to resolve these differences and uncover a more robust hypothesis. I built a phylogeny of the Accipitridae using all available sequences for seven different genes. One major goal was to resolve the relationships among the Accipiter. Buteoninae and Sea Eagle clades. This analysis included more species than the previous analyses and, in general, found more support for basal nodes than the others. This denser sampling also confirmed the non-monophyly of the genus Accipiter. Circus species are clustered with one of the Accipiter clades. In addition, Accipiter tririrgotus is sister taxa to the clade comprised of Kaupifalco, Melierux. the Cirrus/Accipiter. Glade and the Sea Eagle and Buteo/Buteoninae species. This analysis resolved the trichotomy in the pernine kites, placing Eutriorchis with the Chonclrohierux Leptoclon clade. In addition, Megatriorchis ss sister taxon to the Circus Glade. Similarly. within the buteonines. Busarellus is sister taxon to Rostrhumusand Gerunospiza . rather than as sister taxon to the remaining species.
