Abstract:
Effect of RvEl and omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) on an asthmatic murine model Previous studies have shown evidence that ResolvinEl(RvE1), an endogenous lipid mediator derived from Eicosapentaenoic acid, which in turn is obtained from Omega 3 fatty acids, contribute to the resolution of an allergic inflammatory response. We studied and compared the effects of RvE1 and Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) in airway reactivity and inflammation using an asthmatic murine model. RvE 1 was administered intraperitoneally both pre and post aerosolized challenge and fish oil was administered via oral gavage once daily from day 1 till 14th day of a 15 day protocol. The data suggests that resolvins attenuate inflammation in response to allergens (post-allergen inhalation treatment) but do not have an inhibitory effect on inflammation (pre-allergen inhalation treatment). Further, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids neither reduced airway hyper-responsiveness in asthmatic (allergic) mice, nor had any additive effects with resolvin. Airway inflammation was attenuated with resolvin treatment while similar effects were not observed with omega-3 fatty acids. In conclusion, omega-3 fatty acids did not have a beneficial effect in our model of asthma. Further studies are required to evaluate the role of omega-3 fatty acids in chronic asthmatic models.
