Abstract:
The capability of numerical simulations to predict typhoons has been improved in recent decades. While the track prediction has become adequate, the intensity prediction is still far from satisfactory. Vortex initialization is an efficient method to improve the estimations of initial conditions for typhoon forecasting. In this thesis, a new vortex initialization scheme will be developed. The new scheme will be evaluated through track, center sea-level pressure (CSLP) and maximum surface wind speed (MWSP). The vertical eddy diffusion by turbulent mixing processes within the boundary layer plays an important role in the typhoon intensification. New versions of K-profiles are proposed and evaluated together with the original version in the YSU planetary boundary layer scheme.
