Abstract:
Currently, there is a trend to gather information about people's experiences with their mental health care. Surveys and questionnaires is the typical method of gathering such information to hold mental health programs accountable and better inform clients and stakeholders. However, these surveys and questionnaires do not assess for people's experiences with internalized stigma and recovery expectations. Both of which are also important in understanding people's experiences with their mental health diagnosis, their care, social supportive network, and community. This study hypothesized that 1) internalized stigma would negatively impact evaluations of outpatient mental health services, 2) recovery expectations would positively impact evaluations of outpatient mental health services, and 3) both internalized stigma and recovery expectations would impact evaluations of outpatient mental health services. Results indicated that higher recovery expectations predicted more positive evaluations of outpatient mental health services. Internalized stigma acted as a moderator of the relationship between recovery expectations and evaluations of their care. The data provides some evidence that other factors, such as internalized stigma and recovery expectations, influence how people evaluate their services. Implications of these results were discussed.
