Abstract:
In this qualitative research study, seven African American female leaders gave their perception of the depiction of African American female leadership in media clips. The purpose of this study is to highlight the impact of media clips on the self-perception of African American female leadership potential. The data was collected and analyzed using transcendentalist phenomenological research, which focuses on information given by the participants (Creswell, 2012). The overarching themes that evolved from the data were the perception of strong and transformative leadership qualities and media imagery. Use to seeing negative images of African American female leaders over much of their lifetime, these leaders enjoyed seeing African American female leaders in a positive light. These African American female leaders are board-developers, using their social capital in the board room; they know their value; they are "superwomen," who change roles fluidly; they are change agents, who weld powers on behalf of followers; they are critical thinkers, who are intelligent; they tell their stories; they seek justice and opportunities for improvement. The implications are that these women will seek quality media clips that uplift their image of themselves, not degrade themselves.
