Abstract:
This dissertation traced the experience of lived hope from the Fall of President Batista's dictatorship in 1959 as a result of the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro, to the era of the Balseros (Rafters) in the late 1990s. The phenomenological study of hope (or how hope is lived out) is described through the use of archival arts such as: films, paintings, and music, as data. These data are used to illustrate the process of historical unfolding (change over time) through the use of the metabletic method. The metabletics approach is a qualitative research strategy developed by Jan Hendrik Van den Berg, which aims to understand how a phenomenon evolves overtime. Thus, this dissertation attempted to illustrate how the experience of lived hope for the Cuban people has changed over time and how these changes have manifested themselves and have been lived out.
