Healthcare student retention rates have been a problem across the United States for several years, and it is difficult for colleges to develop orientation programs for the students to attend before they start their programs. The purpose of this qualitative, case study was to investigate the perceptions of students, faculty, and administrators regarding the factors that contribute to student persistence in healthcare program in one Maryland community college. Twenty-five participants from the healthcare programs participated in individual interviews for healthcare students and the focus group consisted of five directors from each of the healthcare programs. Tinto's departure theory was the theoretical framework for the research study. The study allowed participants to share their perceptions about student retention to be coded and analyzed to determine the emergent themes. Observation, interviewing, and reflection was the strategy used during the data analysis process. The findings revealed four major themes: (a) lack of family support team, (b) student academics and readiness issues, (c) student personal issues and (d) institutional support. Findings in this study provided information for colleges that may be helpful in their future retention rates that help college degrees. The data suggest that schools should implement orientations that incorporate time management skills, effective study habits, and mentoring programs to improve retention rates. Future qualitative studies that include the perceptions of the higher administrators about student retention within the healthcare programs would be useful to examine the differences in their views.
