Abstract:
This study examined the utility of ethnocultural empathy, empathy specifically generated between individuals who are ethnically or culturally different from one another, as a moderator for racial bias in a perspective-taking task within a general public sample. White participants were asked to rate their feelings of identification and sympathy for either a Black or White character after reading a story about that character. It was hypothesized that participants would demonstrate racial bias by reporting less identification with and less sympathy for the Black character than the White character, but that ethnocultural empathy would moderate this bias. Results found that while self-reported ethnocultural empathy was not upheld as a moderator for racial bias in the perspective-taking task, it was found to have a direct effect on sympathy for the characters, such that those reporting greater ethnocultural empathy similarly reported higher sympathy. Significant differences in responses were found depending on the racial category of the character (White or Black) though they were the inverse of hypothesized results (more identification and more sympathy for the Black character). Possible explanations for these findings and their implication for both future research and clinical practice are discussed.
