Abstract:
This qualitative phenomenological research was to understand the lived experiences of 10 nephrologist, and their challenges and barriers they experienced in using an electronic medical record (EMR) system. Ten nephrologists from Southeast Texas provided their individual perspectives and lived experiences of how EMRs impacted their daily workloads. Documentation for renal patients consist of vital information from multiple healthcare professionals. Any errors in notation, transcription, or missing information from a medical record can negatively impact patient outcomes and can result in a tragic incident or death. Data was collected from interviews of participants, notes, and records. A synergistic process was used to identify four themes from the data. Four major themes were as follows: a) Paper documentation is easier to use than EMRs; b) EMR challenges still impact the workflow; c) The importance of putting patients over technology; and d) What the system designers need to know. The findings indicated that the nephrologists view: costs are a major concern of doctors and medical facilities; some doctors will not use EMRs because they prefer to maintain patient information in paper format; and copy and paste features of the EMR for documentation of patient information could cause lawsuits against hospital and physicians, just to name a few. The study culminated in recommendations for leadership and suggestion for future research.
